Who Qualifies For A 403b Retirement Plan

403b retirement plans are tax deferred plans offered to employees of tax-exempt, non-profit organizations such as schools, charities and churches. The contributions and earnings are not taxed until they are withdrawn and are then taxed as ordinary income. The idea of this plan was to promote the use of retirement plans in certain organizations. Participants of the 403b retirement plans are often employed as teachers, librarians, nurses, doctors and ministers. They receive pensions upon retirement but the amount is too low to equal their previous salaries and should be supplemented with contributions to a 403b retirement plan.

The 403b retirement plan works well because it lowers the amount of tax paid. The contributions are made on a pre-tax basis and the savings on tax increase with the amount of contribution paid into the fund. With this plan, the employer allocates a certain amount of investment opportunities to their staff, who then select where exactly their own money should be invested. There are tax credits for people who are on low incomes while saving with the 403b retirement plan with joint filers being eligible twice the threshold as single filers. Part time employees are also eligible to contribute to this plan as long as it is offered by the employer. Employees who are participating in a compensation plan such as the 401k, those who contribute $200 or less per year and certain employees who work less than 20 hours a week are not eligible for this plan.

The investment management fees on this plan are normally charged by the investment company as a percentage of the total value of the account. There are also some administrative costs; the employer has certain costs for implementing the 403b retirement plan. The investment opportunities available to participants of this plan include fixed annuities, equity indexed annuities, variable annuities and mutual funds. Annuities often penalize investors who leave their scheme. If the money is transferred to another plan early on in the scheme, there will be a surrender charge. There are annual fees for annuities as well as mutual funds. The percentage rates and total charges to a 403b retirement plan should be fully investigated before committing to the scheme.
